In March, the largest UK outsourcing services company, Capita, was hit by a cyber attack, which caused widespread disruption. Subsequently, around 90 organisations filed data breach reports to the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office), with tens of thousands of people now being notified their data has been breached.
Following the cyber attack, just two months later, in May, Capita filed a second data breach. The ICO said in a statement that the second breach “emerged in May when it was reported that the firm had left their benefits data fields in publicly accessible storage, prompting several councils to say they thought their data had been compromised.”
What do I do if I have been notified of my data being breached?
If your personal information has been exposed in the Capita data breach, you may be eligible to make a Capita data breach compensation claim.
Organisations have a legal duty to securely store and process information they hold about individuals. If this personal information is breached, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) grants you the right to submit a compensation claim for any distress or loss caused.
